Felt/Magnet Board:

This week we did two magnet boards - one in the middle of storytime and one at the end. We're finding that this helps keep the kids on track and brings their focus back to the stories.
To fit in with our Opposites theme we first did 5 Pigs So Squeaky Clean:

5 pigs so squeaky clean,
Cleanest pigs you’ve ever seen,
Wanted to go outside and play
1 jumped into the mud,
landed with a great big THUD!
now there are 4 pigs squeaky clean...

And so on until you have no more clean pigs!

I loved Miss Mary's idea of having one side of the pigs clean and one side dirty so I decided to use that in my magnet board. I used a basic, cutesy pig clipart picture and added splotches of brown mud in Microsoft Publisher, but you could easily drawn muddy splotches on your pigs pictures.

I then printed out a set of clean pigs and a set of dirty pigs, cut them out, and attached a magnet to each side - THEN I glued them back to back. You end up having a magnet facing each way on the inside so either way they will stick!

At the end of our storytime, we did a Tortoise and the Hare magnet board.
It's our telling of the classic story. Once upon a time there was a Tortoise and a Hare. The Hare was the fastest animal in the forest and would tease the slow Tortoise. So they decided to have a race to see who who really was the faster animal!

The Hare took off like lightening while the Tortoise lumbered on - slow and steady. The Hare soon became very tired from running so fast for so long. He figured he was far enough ahead of the Tortoise that he could take a nap and still win. So, the Hare lied down and took a nap under a tree.

Meanwhile, the Tortoise lumbered on, slow and steady, until he reached the finish line! The Hare had slept straight through the race! And the Moral is: Slow and Steady Wins the Race!

Felt/Magnet Board:

Today we did a magnet board version of Leo Lionni's A color of His Own - the story of a chameleon who is tired of constantly changing colors and wants a color of his own (hence the title). It's a very, very cute story and since it involves leaves changing colors we decided to use it for our weather theme (it kinda makes sense! but whatever - it's cute!).

Ms. V printed out copies of the book's illustrations and we used those as our magnet board pieces. The illustrations are so vibrant, it really worked beautifully. We did this in the middle of our storytime when attentions were beginning to wane and the kids really seemed to enjoy the story.

Experiment:

Torandos!!!! Sort of!

We made a tornado in a bottle this week to show a scarier part of weather. It's not all sunshine and rainbows after all! We were fortunate enough to get two plastic tubes to connect two bottles to form the necessary parts to create a tornado! We then talked about motion and air movement and whatnot though frankly the kids were more interested in the spinning water than why it worked!

If you are not fortunate enough to get such a fantastic device, then you can make your own using duct tape and this book:
Craft:

This week we made a Weather Wheel Chart!! Whoo-Hoo! These kits were very simple - printed circles to color, a paper fastener, and a paper arrow - they were done in about 10 minutes, no problem!

Fizz Boom Read!: Colors

June 3, 2014

Colors!!

A storytime devoted to the SCIENCE of colors!

Opening Song: Where is Thumbkin? - Kimbo

Song 2: Skinny-Marinky-Dinky-Dink - 100 Singalong Songs

Song 3: Dance Your Fingers / Clap Along With Me - Wee Sing For Baby

Song 4: Put Your Little Foot - Wee Sing Fun N Folk

Song 5: Let Everyone Clap Like Me - Wee Sing in the Car

Song 6: Shake My Sillies Out - Raffi

Song 7: Wheels on the Bus

Song 8: Mr. Sun - Raffi

Felt/Magnet Board:

Because we noticed last week that doing a magnet board towards the end of our program helps the kids refocus, we decided to give it another try this week. So! We pulled off TWO magnet board this week.

We started with a rhyme called "Mixing Colors" which I found at loving2learn.com. It goes:

Red, blue, and yellow
all standing in a row.
I mix them together
and this is what they show.
Orange, purple and green
these are the colors
that can be seen.

So, I had Red Blue and Yellow in a row and then I showed what happens when we mix the colors together:

Our second magnet board was What House is the Mouse In? We ask "Little Mouse, Mouse are you in the (color) house?" and we pull of the houses until we reveal which house the mouse is in!

Of course the house is in the last house you call out, but they don't need to know that!

Experiment:

Yes! Yes! In the spirit of our Summer Reading theme we did a little experiment. Our experiment came from the book How to Make a Liquid Rainbow. I thought the "rainbow" part of it would be cool with our colorful theme.

Now, it's supposed to look the the cover: a series of bright, happy, colorful layers that DO NOT MIX due to their various densities. I used the ingredients listed: corn syrup, dish liquid, water, oil, and rubbing alcohol. Apparently I did something wrong or my ingredients didn't get the memo because my rainbow turned into the black blob below:

So I did a little tweaking and used the three layers I knew without a doubt would not mix: corn syrup, water, and oil. I colored each layer to make them easier to distinguish. PS - Did you know you cannot color cooking oil - they color just forms little droplets that don't mix in with the oil. I learned something new!

I colored the corn syrup blue and the water red and was forced to leave the oil alone. And it made this:

So I asked the kids "What will happen if I mix this up? Will the colors mix and make a new color or will they separate back out and make three different colors again?" The kids were pretty excited to see and, of course, the layers separated back out after I shook the jar. Not too bad for not being what I expected!

Craft:

We made a very prettyful rainbow this week! It was a prepared kit (thank goodness) and we had only just enough to pass around! The direction were a bit confusing, but the kids produced some beautiful crafts!

How many animals make nests? This book goes over a bunch of nest-making animals from all over.

Songs:

Opening Song: Where is Thumbkin? - Kimbo

Song 2: Skinny-Marinky-Dinky-Dink - 100 Singalong Songs for Kids

Song 3: Shake My Sillies Out - Raffi

Song 4: Peanut Butter and Jelly - Kimbo

Song 5: Dance Your Fingers/Clap Along With Me - Wee Sing for Baby

Song 6: Put Your Little Foot - Wee Song Fun N' Folk

Song 7: If You're Happy and You Know It - Kimbo

Song 8: Wheels on the Bus - 100 Singalong Songs for Kids

Felt/Magnet Board:

This week we did two magnet boards! We started with Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? We were able to easily print the graphics for this magnet board from the wonderful folks at DLTK Teach. That took care of our "Animal" aspect (again, work with me here!).

Out second board we made ourselves using simple clipart from Microsoft Word - 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. This took care of our "Mommy" aspect...since mama calls the doctor...and she's a mama of monkeys afterall (still...work with me!).

 Craft:

To go with our 5 Little Monkeys magnet board we made a Monkey Mask! Found at FirstPalette.com,
a website filled with tons of simple printable crafts! We printed ours onto different colors of cardstock paper and the kids LOVED looking like monkeys. We then had them tape or glue a large popsicle stick (tongue depressor size) to make the monkey face into a mask.

A bit about Seek and Find Bottles...!

Last year, we had a Summer Reading workshop where a very nice librarian dished out ideas for various Summer Reading activities. One thing she held up was a Seek and Find bottle - a clear plastic bottle with colored plastic bits and objects hidden inside. Since the theme was "Dig Into Reading" the idea was to have kids dig and uncover the objects by moving the tiny bits in the bottle - see? Digging...as in Dig...Into...Reading... Ha! Right?

Anyhoo... I just had a feeling that those bottle (retail between $20 and $30 or so) would be pretty easy to make at home. And wouldn't you know it, Google to the rescue!!

The tutorial I used for our first round of Seek and Find bottles was at pbs.org. The mom in question was preparing for a road trip and wanted to have something to occupy the kids in the backseat. So she made some nifty little bottles with colored rice and whatever tiny thing would fit into the opening. This is where the idea for colored rice first came from for me!

And so... the first Seek and Find Bottles were born:

Yes, a year later they are a little worse for wear. The kids have actually taken to using them as shakers and noisemakers, but every once in a while an older kid or a mom notices that there are little goodies hidden inside and...oh yeah!...there's even a giant blue list of things hidden inside tied to each one.

Due to the extreme popularity and not-so-eagerness with the sharing, another batch of Seek and Find bottles were due.

First and foremost, the rainbow rice. It is not a requirement, but it sure does look cool! The recipe for colored rice is fairly simple and can be found at a ton of blogs and websites, but here it is:

I made 3 cups of each color to spread into 6 bottles so my recipe came out something like this per bag:

3 cups plain, uncooked, white rice.
1 tbs rubbing alcohol
10 drop liquid food coloring
...and that's it.

You add all the ingredients into the bags, adding what colors you so desire and then shake the bags CAREFULLY. You do not want to drop one and have it burst all over your communal kitchen floor! Shake the bags until all the rice is the desired color - you can add more food coloring to get a bolder shade if you wish.

Then you poor the rice into an open container of some kind and bring them outside to let them dry. The rice will reek of rubbing alcohol so its best to take it outside to dry in the sun.

I accidentally left my little boxes of rice dry overnight, but I don't believe it's necessary to let them sit that long. A few hours should in the bright sun should do.

Then comes the fun part! I put each color I made (red/pink, yellow, green, purple, and blue) each into their own bottle and used the remainder of each color to make a sixth "rainbow" one. I found with the old ones that the color weren't as vibrant when constantly mixed with the other colors so, hopefully, they'll keep a stronger hue this way. We'll see

Next I basically put in whatever small plastic objects we had on hand that would fit through the top opening.

Once I was satisfied with the rice to hidden object ratio, I hot-glued the caps on so that no curious little hands can dump the contents onto our nice carpeted floors :-)  I made note of all the objects in each bottle, printed them onto a bright card stock page, and covered  them with contact paper to give them a little more durability. Some plain yarn to attach and VOILA! 6 more seek and find bottles!!

A note on bottles: be mindful when selecting your bottles. The ones I used are, in fact, Pepsi bottles. This does not mean I necessarily endorse Pepsi or down bottles and bottles of Pepsi a day... but when I was walking up and down the aisle at the grocery I couldn't help but notice they have a good shape to them for this project - perfectly clear and limited curving and ridges. Sold!

Another note about contents: use plastic! In the original bottles, I used foam pieces and plastic pieces both. I do not recommend foam! I'm sure it's common sense, but I really didn't think about it at the time! :-) The rice causes dust which coats eveything in the bottles - including the foam pieces. So instead of having an orange square that says "SUPER," I now have a dingy green square that says nothing legible at all. Again, plastic is best!

So, if anyone anywhere has ever wonder what it would take to make Seek and Find bottles...well... there you have it!

Mother Goose!

May 13, 2014

Mother Goose!

A storytime devoted to those classic nursery rhymes we all know and love - with a new twist!

Books:

The Foggy Foggy Forest by Nick Sharratt
A shadowy picture book! This book offers a shadowed outline of all the creatures that fill the Foggy Foggy Forest before revealing a full color picture on the next page. The kids had a great time trying to guess what the picture could possibly be.

Old Mother Hubbard by Jane Cabrera
"Old Mother Hubbard went to her cubbard to get her old dog a bone..." And then what? This book lets you know all the silly things Old Mother Hubbard will do for her dog.

Mary Had a Little Lamp by Kack Lechner
What would've happened if Mary had a Lamp instead of a Lamb? Some pretty silly things and this is one silly books!

Songs:

Opening Song: Where is Thumbkin?  -  Kimbo

Song 2: Skinny-Marinky-Dinky-Dink  -  100 Singalong Songs for Kids

Song 3: Hickory Dickory Dock  -  Wee Sing Mother Goose

Song 4: Dance Your Fingers/ Clap Along With Me  -  Wee Sing for Baby

Song 5: Shake My Sillies Out  -  Raffi

Song 6: If You're Happy and You Know It  -  Kimbo

Song 7: Wheels on the Bus  -  100 Singalong Songs for Kids

Felt/Magnet Board:

This week we did our old "Let's see if the kids can guess this story" game with our felt board pieces. This time we tried:

Little Boy Blue:

 And Hickory Dickory Dock:

Of course, the parents helped a little. The kids gave their guesses and then we all sang the rhymes together.

Craft:

 A Humpty Dumpty Craft!!

We printed out the Humpty Dumpty broken egg puzzle/template from I Heart Craft Things! We printed a basic brick background onto red cardstock to serve as the wall for Humpty Dumpty's fall and used paper band-aids to stitch him back together. The kids really enjoyed the band-aids part of the craft. Though, be warned, the putting Humpty together again is more difficult than it appears!.

Mother's Day!

May 6, 2014

Mother's Day!

A storytime devoted to mommies on their special day!

Books:

Clifford's Happy Mother's Day by Norman Bridwell
The Night Before Mother's Day by Natasha Wing

We had a trainee with us today so we only ran through two books. The kids were getting a bit restless so we sang and sang and sang!

Songs:

Opening Song: Where is Thumbkin? - Kimbo

Song 2: Skinny-Marinky-Dinky-Dink - 100 Singalong Songs

Song 3: Shake My Sillies Out - Raffi

Song 4: Dance Your Fingers Up/Clap Along With Me - Wee Sing for Baby

Song 5: If You're Happy and You Know It - Kimbo

Song 6: Wheels on the Bus - 100 Singalong Songs

Felt/Magnet Board:

Today we did a manget board version of MOMMY which is a Mother's Day version of BINGO! The idea for this came from Storytime ABC's

Yes, I did intend to color the flowers bright happy springy colors, but I completely forgot! Anyway - the song goes just like "Bingo" but with a twist:

I have a very special friend
And Mommy is her name-o
M-O-M-M-Y

And so on... Now in Bingo you substitute a CLAP for one letter at a time. On the other side of these flowers, I printed clipart of mommy faces:

 Until you get to...

I put magnet on both side of the paper, but it looks like only one set actually held up - the mommy faces did not stick to the magnet board. Now at this point, Storytime ABC's have a second little poem:

Five Pretty Mommies
Five pretty Mommies I one knew
Cute ones, busy ones, happy ones, too
But the one in the middle, pretty as can be
(I've also seen - "that belongs to me")
I love her and she loves me!

Down to the grocery store we did go,
Wibble Wobble, Wibble Wobble, to and fro.
But the one in the middle, as pretty as can be,
I love her and she loves me!

I, on the other hand, forgot to go through the second rhyme but - oh well!

Craft:

Today, we did a simple Mother's Day card we found at Making Learning Fun. I was able to print it with the cover picture on the front and so that the inscription ("Happy Mother's Day! Love,______) came out on the inside.
